Varanasi was the last stop of an incredible backpacking trip through northern India. I arrived in this fascinating city after 14 hours of bus and train travel (including what was described to me as "cattle class" – you know, the usual hanging out of a 3rd class wagon on a busy day for hours on end). I came here from the so-different desert town of Jaisalmer – all the way to the Pakistani border. Most describe Varanasi as overwhelmingly dirty, dense, and hard to deal with. To me, after that trip, it was a soothing dive into a mystical and spiritual place like no other. Smoking ganja with Sadhus. Contemplating the transience of life as the scent and sight of human flesh from nearby burning ghats fills the senses. And then, it was time to go. On, to the calm and hustle-free mountains of Nepal. This lady in blue, between the wagons, was my last, and lasting, memory of India. #varanasi #travel #india #travelphotography #explorer #igtravel #nationalgeographic #lumix #discoverearth A post shared by Maximilian M.
